Summary charts are presented for the census below. They're given in the same order as the questions were on the census. Text questions and the form question are missing, since they don't lend themselves to superficial summary charts like these. The charts were auto-generated for the most part, so aren't the prettiest. I've provided some minimal commentary interspersed with the charts.
Click on images to view them full-size. Where "N=..." is given, it indicates the total number of responses plotted on the graph for that question. Where "above: ..." is given, it indicates the number of responses which fell above the upper bound of the graph (i.e., N + above = the total number of responses for the question
.)
Responses for the skills are available here (on a separate page since they take up a lot of space). There is also a separate discussion about natural/pre-existing tulpas here.
Throughout the census, 'tulpa' was used in a broad sense to refer to various kinds of multiplicity; the analysis below reflects that. I'm aware that many in the community don't see the term as all-encompassing (many text answers given said as much).
Lastly, thank you to everyone who helped on the census at various stages, and of course, thank you to everyone who answered it.
At a glance the above results are pretty consistent with each other.
If you're curious about the relationship between these two,
Sex | ||
---|---|---|
Gender | Female | Male |
Female | 68 | 24 |
Male | 16 | 188 |
Genderqueer | 10 | 10 |
Agender | 7 | 8 |
Other | 4 | 8 |
(How to read this table: 24 respondents answered that their sex was male and identified gender was female.)
The community seems to get slightly less hetero every year, but this is fairly consistent with 2015. Everything except heterosexual is disproportionately represented compared to the base population, but not too far off what you would expect from a 'weird internet community' like the MLP fandom or something like that.
The ticks above are slightly ambiguous; in the histograms on this page, integers are put in the bin above/to the right of their tick. That means that, for instance, the number of people who answered '2' to the above question is 172; the bin with 9 counts in it corresponds to people who answered '7'. One joker said that they had 0 personalities, including themselves.
Note that these following three questions allowed multiple answers.
I've included a discussion on natural tulpas, tulpas created before finding the community, and so on, on a separate page here.
The spiky distribution above is probably down to people counting the number of years they'd known about tulpas and multiplying that by 12, which they were instructed to do by the survey if they couldn't remember the exact month figure.
I'm surprised by how high the 'unsure' proportion is here.
Anyone who's afraid of being usurped by tulpas can rest easy here.
The following two charts count tulpas from all hosts with less than 11 tulpas, so although there were 360 responses, there are more tulpas than that.
I've taken the questions above against the host genders/sexes and sexualities. In the following tables, the tulpa answers are on the top, and the hosts are along the side. The numbers given are total numbers of tulpas, again from all hosts with less than 11 tulpas.
Tulpa gender identity (on the top) vs. host gender identity (on the side):
Tulpa gender identity | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Host gender identity | Male | Female | Genderqueer | Agender | Other |
Male | 80 | 211 | 10 | 13 | 4 |
Female | 65 | 70 | 5 | 7 | 2 |
Genderqueer | 18 | 28 | 11 | 8 | 0 |
Agender | 9 | 16 | 2 | 5 | 1 |
Genderfluid | 2 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Other | 6 | 8 | 2 | 3 | 1 |
(How to read this table and others: there were 211 female tulpas with male hosts.)
Tulpa gender identity vs. host sex:
Tulpa gender identity | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Host biological sex | Male | Female | Genderqueer | Agender | Other |
Male | 69 | 271 | 16 | 19 | 6 |
Female | 108 | 68 | 13 | 17 | 2 |
Other | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Tulpa sexuality vs. host sexuality:
Tulpa sexual orientation | ||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Host sexual orientation | Heterosexual | Homosexual | Bisexual | Pansexual | Asexual | Other |
Heterosexual | 94 | 11 | 56 | 13 | 26 | 4 |
Homosexual | 1 | 5 | 3 | 7 | 7 | 2 |
Bisexual | 29 | 11 | 77 | 14 | 18 | 3 |
Pansexual | 7 | 8 | 11 | 41 | 17 | 4 |
Asexual | 7 | 4 | 3 | 6 | 16 | 3 |
Other | 12 | 3 | 5 | 6 | 14 | 1 |
In the next two questions, several people mistook this question as asking tulpa ages in months, since a question before — asking how long they'd known about tulpas — asked for that, confusingly. In what you see below, I've conservatively tried to identify and fix those mistakes by cross-checking with other answers. Both versions of the raw data are available.
The answers for individual skills (visualisation, imposition, ...) are on a separate page, here.
15 minutes, 30 minutes and an hour are the most popular.
In hindsight, the above questions probably should have specified waking time. About a third of hosts who said that they were aware of the body's senses 'most of the time' also gave themselves 0 skill with switching, to which my first thought would be that they counted time asleep as time spent unaware of the body's senses.
The following three questions were fairly speculative questions aimed at judging the level of perceived/actual 'parallel processing' going on.
I assigned the textual answers in the above two questions ranks of 0-4 (so, 0 being 'Never'/'Never active', 1 being 'Little time'/'Rarely', and so on); the correlations between those and answered ability in parallel processing/switching is given below. It's difficult to infer much from it, though. There are no dramatic correlations or lacks thereof, and the whole procedure is very weak in the first place, between subjectively-rated abilities with no real guidelines, and ranking non-numerical answers.

This one is heartwarming.
